Your Healing Isn’t Linear: Why Backsliding Doesn’t Mean You Failed

There was a week I thought I had it all figured out.
I was journaling every day, feeling centered, setting boundaries like a pro. I felt strong.

Then came the bad day.
The anxiety. The spiraling thoughts.
The text I swore I wouldn’t send—but did anyway.

I remember thinking, “Ugh. I’m back at square one.”

But I wasn’t.
And neither are you.

Healing Doesn’t Move in a Straight Line

Healing isn’t a checklist. It’s not a perfect climb to the top.
It’s up, then down. Forward, then back. Two steps ahead, one step sideways.

And every part of it counts.

Why We Backslide (Even When We Know Better)

Let’s be real—it’s not because we’re weak.
Sometimes we:

  • Get triggered by something we didn’t see coming

  • Fall back into old habits under stress

  • Miss someone who wasn’t good for us

  • Just… have a hard day

It doesn’t mean we haven’t healed. It means we’re still healing.
And that’s allowed.

4 Things to Remember When You Backslide

1. Awareness = Progress

The fact that you notice the pattern now means you’re growing. Before, it was automatic. Now, you’re awake to it.

2. You Don’t Lose the Lessons

Every step you’ve taken is still in you.
Even if you revisit an old wound, you return wiser, stronger, softer.

3. You’re Not Starting Over—You’re Stepping Back to Move Forward

Sometimes a pause or a detour is what your nervous system needs.
Healing isn’t a race. It’s a return to self.

4. Shame Slows You Down—Grace Keeps You Going

You don’t have to beat yourself up to move forward.
You can choose compassion. You can say:
“I’m still proud of myself. I’m still healing. I’m still worthy.”

Try writing this into your EmpowerHer Mindset Workbook after a tough moment. There's space to process setbacks without judgment—and still celebrate your comeback.

Pause + Reflect:

When was the last time you backslid into something you thought you were done with?
What did you learn from it—and how can you offer yourself grace this week?

Your growth doesn’t need to be perfect to be real.
