Silencing the Inner Critic: Techniques for Positive Self-Talk

Have you ever said something to yourself like, “I’m not good enough,” or “I always mess things up”? That voice in your head—that harsh, mean one—is called your inner critic. And it’s time to quiet it down.

You deserve kindness, especially from yourself.

What Is the Inner Critic?

The inner critic is that voice in your head that points out every mistake, doubts your abilities, and makes you feel small. It often comes from fear or past experiences—but it’s not the truth.

You wouldn’t talk to your best friend like that… so why talk to yourself that way?

Step 1: Catch the Critic

The first step is to notice when your inner critic shows up. Pay attention to the voice in your head. Is it judging you? Calling you names? Doubting your abilities?

Just recognizing it is powerful. You can say to yourself, “That’s not helpful,” and choose to think differently.

Step 2: Talk Back with Truth

Now it’s time to respond. When your critic says:

  • “You’re not smart enough”—say, “I am learning and growing every day.”

  • “You’ll never get it right”—say, “I’m allowed to make mistakes and keep trying.”

Use the EmpowerHer Mindset Workbook to write down your inner critic’s words—and then flip them into positive ones. There are pages that help you do this step-by-step.

Step 3: Be Your Own Hype Woman

Every day, say a few kind things to yourself. Look in the mirror and try these:

  • “I am enough just as I am.”

  • “I’m doing my best, and that’s more than enough.”

  • “I deserve love, rest, and peace.”

The more you practice, the quieter that mean voice gets.

Step 4: Surround Yourself with Support

Sometimes we need reminders from others, too. Follow accounts that lift you up. Read books that speak to your worth. Hang out with people who encourage you to believe in yourself.

You’re not alone. You’re human—and you’re healing.
